What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?

Answer engine optimisation is the practice of writing and structuring web pages so that search engines can take a clear answer from them and show it directly in the results. This guide explains how it works, how it differs from SEO and how to start.

Answer engine optimisation in one paragraph

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) means shaping your content so that a search engine can lift a short, correct answer from it. The answer then appears in a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, an AI Overview or a voice assistant reply. The page that supplies the answer is usually named and linked.

How AEO differs from classic SEO

Classic SEO tries to rank a whole page in the list of results. AEO tries to win one specific answer on that results page. A page can rank fifth and still be quoted in the answer box, and a page can rank first without being quoted at all.

The two depend on each other. Google mostly quotes pages it already trusts for a topic, so AEO works best on top of sound SEO rather than instead of it.

Where answers appear in Google

Google shows direct answers in several places. Each one rewards slightly different formats.

Featured snippets

A box above the normal results with a paragraph, list or table taken from one page. Short definitions, numbered steps and small comparison tables are the most common formats.

People Also Ask

A list of related questions that expand to show a short answer from a web page. Each new question a searcher opens loads more questions, so one page can appear for many of them.

AI Overviews

A summary written by Google’s AI at the top of some results, with links to the pages it used. It tends to draw on pages that answer the question plainly and agree with other trusted sources.

How search engines choose an answer

Search engines look for a passage that answers the exact question, comes from a page they trust on the topic and is easy to separate from the rest of the page. In practice that means three things work in your favour:

  • The question appears as a heading, worded the way people search
  • The answer comes straight after the heading, in about 40 to 60 words
  • The page already ranks reasonably well for related searches

Steps to get started with AEO

  1. List the questions your customers ask, using People Also Ask, Google autocomplete and your own sales emails
  2. Search each question and note which page Google quotes today
  3. Pick the questions where your page already ranks on page one
  4. Rewrite those sections with the question as a heading and the answer first
  5. Use lists for steps and small tables for comparisons
  6. Add FAQ and Article schema that matches the visible text word for word
  7. Check again after a few weeks and refresh answers every quarter

Common AEO mistakes

The most common mistake is burying the answer. A section that opens with background and only answers the question in its third paragraph rarely gets quoted.

Other frequent problems are headings that do not match how people phrase the question, answers that change from page to page across a site, and schema that says something different from the visible text. Google ignores markup that does not match the page.

Questions about AEO

Can’t find your answer? Ask us.

Is answer engine optimisation the same as voice search optimisation?

They overlap. Voice assistants often read out the same short answers that appear in featured snippets, so content written answer first serves both. AEO is the wider term and also covers AI Overviews and People Also Ask.

Does winning a featured snippet reduce clicks to my site?

Sometimes, for simple facts that the snippet answers completely. For questions that need more detail, being the quoted source usually brings more clicks and more trust than ranking below the answer box.

Which pages on a website should be optimised for answers?

Start with pages that already rank on page one for question searches. Service pages, FAQ sections and guides are all good candidates, as long as each question is answered directly under its own heading.

Can a small business compete with big sites for answer boxes?

Yes, especially for specific local or niche questions. Google picks the clearest answer from a trusted page, not always the biggest brand, so a precise answer about a Dubai process or price factor can win.
